HOW TO BENEFIT FROM THE ONGOING ASUP STRIKE. Every negative event contains within itself the seed of an equal or greater benefit. ~ Napoleon Hill I believe that in every situation, good or bad, there are things to gain and there are things to lose. However in many cases, whether we lose or gain, it all depends on our choices. Though we may not be able to control the situation of strike, we have absolute control over how we spent the period of strike. If we gain, we take the glory. If we lose we take the blame. It is a bitter truth that during this indefinite strike, many people will lose in double folds. Double folds in the sense that while they may have lose what they should have learnt in class and what theyve even learnt in the past, they still wont take time to do something worthwhile to add value to themselves irrespective of how long the strike may last; which means that the whole period would amount to waste. See, friends, I cannot afford to let you waste such a great time you should otherwise be using to achieve great things on frivolities. Neither will I allow you to go into untimely marriage or give or accept unwanted pregnancy all because of strike. To benefit from this seemingly endless strike therefore, these are few things I suggest you can do. An intimate friend of mine, Aliu Ojo of Civil Engineering dept had benefited so much during his past strike experiences. Apart from his class knowledge of his field as a civil engineering student, he has also acquired vast practical skills in building, road construction and block making. How come? Its because in any situation of strike, rather than stayed idle and arguing fruitlessly over the last or next Chelsea-Man U matches, he would look for sites where manual jobs relating to his course of study are being done, not minding the category of people he worked with. Recently, he disclosed to me what the name of his construction company is going to be. He developed entrepreneurial spirit during ASUP strike. You too can follow his steps depending on your interest. 2013 ASUU STRIKE WAS A BLESSING IN DISGUISE Olawale Ojo, the winner of 6th edition of MTN PROJECT FAME, used ASUU strike of the time for his favor. When interviewed, he started by saying 2013 ASUU strike was a blessing in disguise Everyone is talented. When you were in school, you might not have enough of time to develop or improve on your talents because of many school assignments and hectic long hours lectures after which you d feel too tired. Now that you ve got some free times, you can work on you God-given talents and gifts like Olawale Ojo, the 400level Agronomy student of Ladoke Akintola University, who probably didnt think he could turn a MILLIONAIRE that last year, won for himself, N5m cash prize, a brand new car and one-year recording contract for his effort in the competition and as the name Project Fame implies, Olawale became so famous that you and I could talk about him today. That wasnt a jackpot but, conversion of bad luck ( 6 months of ASUU strike) to good luck. You too can and must do something worthwhile with your priceless time. You may not necessarily be a music star, though. I THANK GOD FOR 2005 ASUU STRIKE While many people would have used this strike to do many worthless things such as robbery, prostitution or at best doing nothing, here is another person Olayinka, a graduate of OAU, the Owner and Chief Executive Officer of a fashion designing company in Lagos, who sees reasons to give thanks to God for strike. When recently contacted by The Punch News Paper, he explained how he diligently overturned the 2005 ASUU strike to his own advantages and finally became a fashion professional with excellence. His boss could be called a tailor, but the level he (Olayinka) has attained in the world of fashion distinguished him and made him a fashion entrepreneur and not just a tailor. Although, this 29-year-old man studied Bio Chemistry. That is why I was very happy when I called another friend of mine who told me that in order not to be devils workshop during this elongated strike, he has already gone far in the work of aluminum roofing. Though, hes a student of department of Building Technology. You too can do something more. I intentionally write this to serve as an eye and to kick-start every Fed/states polytechnic students whos already feeling bored. Believe it or not, this people called government dont have youths in mind than to use us to achieve their political ambitions and thereafter dumb us. But in order to be useful for yourself and to our generation, start by taking advantage of every situation including this strike and do better things so that it will be well with you and me. REMEMBER: If you gain, you take the glory. If you lose, you take the blame.
