HOW TO PICK OUT A SWEET WATERMELON (Ive retired my thumper) Look for these three characteristics on your next watermelon and youll have a fully ripened sweet fruit. 1. The watermelon belly (where it sat on the ground) is a golden yellow not a creamy white. (it was allowed to fully ripen before being picked) 2. There is a web-like streak on the watermelon (this is scaring that took place on the flower membrane during bee pollination. The more scaring, the greater the pollination, the sweeter the fruit) 3. There are a few black dots on the watermelon, often in the web/scar. This is actually dried/crystalized sugars from the inside. I used to thump a melon, and sometimes it was good and other times it was just okay. But, if I find a melon with these three characteristics, Im always very pleased with my choice. :)
