Im watching The Grand Duel. Philip Vanmeer (Peter OBrien) has been accused of the murder of the corrupt patriarch of the Saxon family. Clayton, an ex-sheriff (Lee Van Cleef) tells Vanmeer, currently bounty bait, that not only does he know that the latter is innocent, but he knows who the real killer is. Alan Saxon (Horst Frank) doesnt seem that interested in the truth. His sheriff brother Eli, is interested in nothing else. Implied gay brother David is engaged to an understandably reluctant woman who prefers Vanmeer. Vanmeers father was killed over a silver mine, who had immigrant followers. Several massacres later, the Saxons catch Vermeer and temporarily send Clayton scurrying for safety. When the Saxons try and hang Vermeer, though, Clayton shows up and reveals the real killer...Clayton himself, who couldnt get the Patriarch legally, so he resorted to murder. This forces the unenthusiastic Saxons into the title grand duel... Van Cleefs last worthwhile Spaghetti Western, this does repeat plot points from his previous films.
