Do both what you think important, and what the boss thinks is important, for they need not be mutually exclusive, unless they directly contradict each other. In that case do what is in the best interest of the company, because bosses also come and go but if your company thrives you will as well, and sooner or later, if a boss is failing to thrive the company he or she will be replaced with someone like you who is helping the company to thrive. This exact same general advice in this article can also be applied to the client. Or your producer, or publisher, or whatever the case may be. Help the other parties to thrive and they will find some way to promote you with bigger projects, higher responsibilities, higher pay, perhaps a stake or interest in the company.
