HOW WIKE, DEPUTY ESCAPED DEATH AT RALLY BY DENNIS NAKU, …says culprits will face Justice Governorship candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, Barrister Nyesom Wike and his running mate, Dr (Mrs) Ipalibo Banigo escaped death by the whiskers during a rally in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of the State. Wike, who had taken his campaign train to Abua/Odual on Thursday, paid a courtesy call on the traditional ruler of the area, King Keley Obuge at his palace, when unknown gunmen opened fire from a nearby bush. Reports say that security operatives attached to him engaged the hoodlums in a gun battle and succeeded in repelling the assailants from coming close. The PDP governorship candidate and his supporters were however trapped in the palace of the traditional ruler for about 45 minutes while the sporadic gun duel between the armed hoodlums and the security operatives lasted. Reinforcement was said to have been drafted from police stations including military formations in the area. Wike later addressed a campaign rally at Abua after the combined team of security operatives successfully repelled the armed hoodlums. Condemning the siege, the former Minister of Education called on the police to investigate the incident and make sure that those behind the attack were brought to justice. He alleged that the attack was politically motivated to deter him from campaigning in the Local Government. According to him,“I enjoin the police to fish out those behind this dastardly attack. I tell you, we know those who are involved in this. We shall go after them. They can never run away. “The Commissioner of Police must find out those that carried out this attack this afternoon. You cannot do that here when I come to Abua to campaign and come to Port Harcourt to rest. They must face justice,” he said.
