HRDD Press Release, 11 July 2014 Professional and other courses: Seats still available. The State Government is regularly upgrading the existing schools and at present, there are 64 Senior Secondary Schools. Science is taught in 42, Humanities in 64 and Vocational Education in 52 Senior Secondary Schools. Student welfare measures like Mid Day Meal, distribution of free textbooks, uniforms and laptops has reduced the rate of drop outs and has led to a steady rise in the number of students seeking admission to institutes of higher education. The Gross Enrolment Ratio of the state in higher education is now 24.2% as per All India Survey on Higher Education, Government of India 2011, which is one of the highest in the country. This year the Government colleges in the State are facing a problem of excess number of students seeking admission. While the colleges are able to accommodate almost all, Humanities and Commerce students, there are problems in accommodating all the Science students. To solve this, the Human Resource Development Department has empanelled a number of institutions with professional courses throughout the country. Students are advised to take advantage of these facilities. Seats in courses like BCA, BBA, BSC (Nursing) GNM, Bio-Tech, Micro Biology, B.Tech., Diploma in Technical Education, B.Sc. through IGNOU, B.A. in Service Technology, Tourism Hospitality Management etc. are still available. A new combination of Economics, Statistics and Maths has also been introduced. There are also many private institutions in the state where regular and professional courses are available. Some of these courses are free of cost for SC/ST/OBC(c). The list of courses are uploaded in the website: sikkimhrdd.org . which is regularly updated.
