HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. — At 11:25 p.m. on Oct. 12, Maggie Rosales, a student at Walt Whitman High School, was found dead on Lynch Street in this working-class enclave, fatally stabbed. Her body lay there until the next morning, when crime scene officials took it away. It was the fourth unsolved murder in the neighborhood in a year, and with it, a volatile fault line between residents and the authorities had cracked open. Ten days later, the Rosales case still unsolved, protesters marched on Town Hall. They waved homemade placards, wept and invoked the memory of those killed, shot and stabbed in recent years. Before Ms. Rosales, it was Danny Carbajal, 25, shot dead after work on July 23. Before him, Luis Ramos-Rodriguez, 38, was killed outside a restaurant on busy New York Avenue. Before him, Sarah Strobel, 23, her body found last October on a path in a nature preserve. Many who live here said the inertia in the cases proved that the authorities paid too little attention to solving crimes when the victims were poor or Hispanic or lived in the more economically hardscrabble parts of town.
