HWNHIGHLIGHTS: Worried over the inability of Nigerians to access quality health care as well as reduce cost, the Federal Government yesterday inaugurated a technical working committee to provide a workable plan aimed at achieving universal health coverage in the country. Inaugurating the 12-member working group, the minister of health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu, represented by the General Manager (Planning, Research and Monitoring) National Health Insurance Scheme, Dr. Kenneth Korve pointed out that the group is expected to plan and organise the presidential health summit. According to him, the group is expected to set in motion, the implementation of series of activities that will culminate into a presidential summit on universal health coverage as directed by the presidency. His words: “A major outcome expected from the presidential summit is a detailed and accosted roadmap that will put us on track towards providing universal health coverage for Nigerians in a sustainable manner”. The minister added that President Goodluck Jonathan had directed that the group chart a way towards ensuring universal health coverage for Nigeria through a cohesive, comprehensive, realistic and accosted road map. It is important to note that we are already implementing a number of initiatives that will help us in our goal to achieve universal coverage, including the ongoing review of the NHIS Act, which among others, seeks to make health insurance mandatory, Prof Chukwu noted. The nine term of reference of the committee headed by permanent secretary in the federal ministry of health, Fatimah Bamidele include reviewing the draft concept note of the summit and identifying relevant topics under the programme for technical papers and documents to be developed and/or collected if existing. Others are identifying and contacting experts/ resource persons to develop technical partners and ensuring the development of a concise communiqué. __ SL8.IT for Blackberry
