Habari gani? On this third day of Kwanzaa our focus is on the principle of Ujima In Swahili it means Collective work and responsibility. Anybody remember Black Wall Street in Tulsa, OK? It was located in the all Black section of the city called Greenwood. It was one of the most successful and wealthiest African American communities in the United States during the early 20th Century. Black Wall Street really took off during the years between 1910 and 1921. This was a shining example of our people being together, working together and supporting each other. This collective work and responsibility even survived a devastating race riot. What eventually brought Black Wall Street to its knees was a thinking that what someone else had was better than what we could amass on our own; that thinking was a belief in integration. In the movie, “The Mack”, Olinga teaches the people that, “In order to exist in White America we must build a Black America; not to exclude White America but to be included in America”! When you think about it every ethnicity and race in the U. S. other than Black Americans has an economic power base. This power base is what allows a group of people to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” on these shores. As African Americans we need each other’s skills, protection and prayers. Happy Kwanzaa
