On July 18th 2013 I decided to ride my motorcycle to work. It was a beautiful day outside and a good day to ride. So off I go to work just like every other day. I’m at work and thinking maybe I will just ride home at lunch and put my bike up and see the kids and Jenifer for a few minutes. At about 7:35 pm I text Jenifer and said I’m leaving work now be home in a few. So I go out the gates jump on my bike and head out. While cruising down airport road I’m just thinking how lucky I am to have such a sweet girlfriend and great kids that always want to spend as much time with me as they possibly can. As I come up to kasting road I notice this cream colored little car rolling through the stop sign and at this point I am pretty close to him. About that time I see him look the opposite way and hit the gas. As he tries to beat the other traffic he has no clue I am anywhere close I had already slowed down to about 20 mph and I’m thinking oh shit maybe I can swerve around him. About that time he realizes he can’t make it in the other lane without getting hit by oncoming traffic so he turns into my lane which closes the gap between us fast and leaves me with no chance at all so he hits me head on in dead center of my lane. All I can think is oh my god. I hit him about his headlight on the driver side of his car. As I fly forward the handle bars of the bike catch my shoulders and flip me upside down onto the hood of his car at that time he realizes what has just happened and slams on the breaks which now pushes my bike back and throws me onto the pavement between the car and bike at that point all I could think was please god don’t let him run over me too. As I am lying on the ground I am pretty much out of it but I can hear people screaming and yelling. The guy that hit me was saying I am so sorry I wasn’t watching for a motorcycle I had no clue anyone was around and it’s my fault and he kept saying that over and over . About that time a man touched me on the shoulder and said what is your name son. I told him Jerry and he said Jerry I am a pastor and I am praying for you right now and he is with us here now and it’s going to be ok just lay still and don’t move. Just then a lady spoke to me and said Jerry I am a nurse where do you hurt most and I told her I thought my right leg was broke could she look at it because it was burning . She said I was going to be ok the paramedics were on their way. The third person I spoke with was a coworker that had seen it all happen and was on the phone with 911 the very second the crash occurred. The paramedics arrived shortly after that and was taking good care of me really fast .The sad thing is I never got to see the pastors face and I never seen the nurse. By the time I could focus my eyes and realize what had just happened I was already in the hospital being cared for. I had the nurse’s call Jenifer and she came to be by my side and my brother Tim had also heard about the wreck and was at the hospital with me. As doctors came in and out checking me over all they would say is you are a lucky man Mr. hill so after a few x-rays the doctor and nurse comes back into my room and says I don’t know how you have done this but you are perfectly alright with no broken bones, no cuts, nothing, just bruises so I ask the doctor if I could go back to work and he says sure why not you just got run over by a car and you are perfectly fine so I don’t think work is going to hurt you any. So with Jenifer’s help I go home and change what was left of the clothes I had on and she takes me back to work. I get back to work at 9:10 pm so this whole thing happened in a matter of about an hour and a half. I am truly blessed and thankful for all those people that helped me at the scene and some day would like to meet the pastor and the nurse that helped me there. I did attend church last Sunday and I did thank him for what he has given me and the things he has done for me. Although I am the sore all over my body it’s all good with me I am thankful just to be here and live though that because as the officer in the hospital told me. He said he was sure I was leaving in a helicopter when he pulled up to the scene and he found parts of my Harley 30 feet from the crash site. Pretty sure the Harley is totaled but I’m fine with that too. I will rebuild it or get a new one it’s just a material position and can be replacing easily. I have done a lot of dumb stuff in my life and been in more than my fair share of bad crashes but none of those have every made me think as hard as this one. When that pastor laid his hand on my shoulder and said he is here with us and it’s going to be alright somehow I really knew it was going to be ok and I break out in tears every time I think about it because it touched me very deep in my soul and I really don’t know how to take that because nothing like that has ever happened to me before. As for work well that is a different story. I was given a point for being late coming back from lunch and a written warning and placed on 180 days probation. They said its company policy no matter what the circumstances are. Dedication does not pay there but since I have people that depend on me to be there I will always try my best to take care of those people regardless what the company says.
