Habib Debunking the Raila Myth: Most Landlords in Kibera Are Kikuyus 1. Kikuyu slumlords: So when these slumlords build those shacks, was it Railas job to put a toilet in there for them? When I build my houses for rent, I always make sure that there is a toilet or a latrine. I have never cried to Kwale governor, Salim Mvuria, or my mp Suleiman Dor to build a toilet in my rental units. Lets face facts: the problem in Kibera is partly due to these greedy lot from Central who cant even put toilets in shacks they build. All they think about is money. Small wonder the slumlords tenants dont even want to see them . Jomo Kenyatta’s actually started this problem. He allocated large portions of Kibera land to Nyakinyua traditional dancers (a Gikuyu cultural women group) who frequently entertained Kenyatta at State House. This is how over 50% of Kibera landlords/shack-owners became Kikuyu. Most of the Gikuyu landlords do not even live within the slums and have no incentive to develop their property. It is just money, money, money money…. Yet they cry the loudest about Raila not developing Kibera. 2. Kenya government officials: These absentee landlords banking on minimal investments (poor houses/no water/no electricity/no toilet) and high returns are the who is who in Nairobi. Mps, cabinet secretaries, senators… They include Beth Mugo, Fred Gumo, Ngilu etc. SInce Orengo left office, Charity Ngilu has issued title deeds to 400 acres of prime Kibera land in Kisumu Ndogo, Gatwekera, Laini Saba and Kianda to faceless individuals (read top jubilee government officials) and only a paltry 300 to Nubians. It is land valued at close to Ksh. 60 billion. These are the people leading to the problem in Kibra, not Raila. 3. Moi and his Y2K moribund that included Ruto, Jirongo, etc. This particular group of slumlords spearheaded the encroachment of slums towards the Nairobi dam. Many were former Kalenjin administrators and senior security staff. Just like in the prior regime, they were mostly absentee landlords out for a quick buck. 3. The Kenya governments use of Kibera as a source of foreign exchange earnings. This problem is not going away anytime soon. Uhuru may try to milk it for political gain but nothing will come of his majestic stroll in Kibera slums. Kibera is being preserved for slum tourists i.e. celebrities who are deposited in the middle of the largest slam in Africa in posh vehicles for photo shoots in return for hefty contributions (most of which end up in government officials pockets) The jubilee slumlords want rao to develop their properties..with his personal funds, or jubilee will do it with NYS and Govt funds...go figure.
