Habit Idea #1 - Breakfast. How many times do you get too busy to eat breakfast? Do you just start with coffee and maybe creamer? Or maybe you have a bowl of cereal and milk, or a muffin with your latte at the Bux. Breakfast is pretty important since it sets the rest of your day. Not in the way you may have heard. It doesnt jump start your metabolism and rev your calorie burning engine. It prevents hunger, gives you energy, and keeps your blood sugar stable... if you do it right. If you skip breakfast, that tray of donuts in the breakroom looks pretty darn good. If you undereat at breakfast, your body tends to make up for those calories and then some later in the day. If you aim for mostly carbs or a liquid breakfast, your blood sugar spikes and then drops and so does energy. If you regularly skip or skimp on breakfast, consider making your first habit to tackle eating a healthy breakfast. Even if you make no other changes that first week. Usually you eat breakfast and surprisingly feel pretty good all morning. You make it to lunch, the feeling carries over, and youll be more likely to make a good choice at lunch. You may take a walk or do something in the evening because youve got energy. Even on days where this doesnt happen, you still started out well and are less likely to overeat. Aim for a mix of protein and carbs for breakfast. A starting point for most of us is about 300 - 400 calories with 20-30 grams of it being protein, depending on your daily calorie needs. Eggs in a whole wheat wrap, protein shake and fruit, greek yogurt and whole grain toast. Cereal and granolas can be an option but be careful since most of those are sugary treats in disguise. Try to look for cereals with 5 grams of protein or more, 5 grams of fiber or more, and 10 grams or less of sugar. Remember 5/5/10. Shake the cereal in a container with a little milk and protein powder and youve got a portable meal. Feel free to post your favorite protein/carb breakfast ideas. I bet many of us could use a few new things to try.
