Hacker Threats Rise, With Defenders Lacking: Report Agence France-Presse (01/16/14) The Cisco Annual Security report, released on Jan. 16, indicates that the technology and techniques used by hackers and other online criminals has outpaced security professionals ability to defend against such threats. The report also finds a worldwide shortage of skilled computer defenders, to such a degree that nearly a million skilled security professionals are needed to properly protect machines and networks. The majority of organizations do not have the staff or the systems to detect and react to hacker attacks quickly. Cisco Threat Response Intelligence chief security officer John Stewart says that in order to protect against all possible attacks, defenders must understand the attackers, their motivations and their methods before, during and after an attack. The report also finds that 99 percent of all mobile viruses target devices using Android software, and that there has been remarkable growth in the amount of malware targeting agriculture and mining industries, as well as continued growth in the energy, gas, and oil industries.
