Had a family in a large, new pickup truck pull up and ask what we were doing at the church. When I explained that we were providing free health care to the field laborers and their families in the community, he said, "who gives a flip if they get healthcare, I wanted a yard sale." The timing could not have been more interesting as our local public health liaison and I were discussing Teen Corp and my goals for the program. He was explaining to me how the local community and churches do not chose to help those in need in their own community but instead prefer to do mission work in other countries. After speaking with the man in the truck, I walked back to our public health colleague and he said, "welcome to my community."
