Had a great civil-scientist-birding weekend: CAR Count on - TopicsExpress

Had a great civil-scientist-birding weekend: CAR Count on Saturday, area South of Leandra to Leeupan, and CWAC Count on Sunday at Marievale. Highlight of CAR was witnessing a jackal in pursuit of a rabbit. The chase started about 300m from where we standing in the dirt road, heading straight towards us. The rabbit was so focused on getting away, that it didnt even notice us - went right through us. The jackal got to about 10m from us, then applied the brakes, turned around and went back the way it came. Not happy about the meal that got away. Birding was very slow. They only specials were a lonesome Lilac-breasted Roller and quite a few sightings of Cape Crows. CWAC was good. Quite a bit of waders, nice sighting of an Afr Marsh-Harrier snatching a juv Blacksmith Lapwing and later on a rat/mouse. Completed a 80-count FP card for the main pentad.
