Had a great morning with textile expert Taykeo in Vientiane - Laos. Taykeo has been collecting antique tribal fabrics all of her life and has one of the best collections of Laotian ethnic textiles in the world. Taykeo introduced me to her master weavers who were busy working on individual designs....I was amazed at how complicated the looms actually were...the loom is hand tied and created for each design, silk thread is dyed for each design also...it can take up to 1 day to produce 7.5cm of weave for the more intricate designs. Taykeo is very passionate about keeping the ancient weaving traditions alive in Laos and has interns from other districts who come to learn the skills required. All of the colours are also produced by hand from natural materials - no chemical dyes used here. Taykeo is a dye master as well with a huge knowledge of the processes involved. It has been a real privilege to spend time with Taykeo and to see some of the 600 antique textile pieces that she has collected.
