Had a great weekend in eastern Belgium visiting Annie’s three wonderful host families. I promised Kerry we’d go to a castle, so on the way we stopped off at the medieval hilltop fortress of Franchimont. The wheel on the right is where the people would work off their waffles by grinding the grain. Despite the fact that the chateau was largely ruined, the Belgian archers are still defending it from the invaders, and the girls took shelter in the dungeon. Anyway, after the battle the flag still flew and there was much rejoicing in the valley below, especially with Belgian beer.
