Had a weird deal today with gender... Let me know what you think: I was getting some coffee at a place and the person helping me was super nice and cool and friendly. The other person was not. Eventually, I had to go to the bathroom, so I asked Nice Person where they were, and was pointed in the right direction. To my dismay, the toilet was mad clogged. I had to go though, so I figured Id inform an employee and be on my way, since my house was close anyway. I let Nice Person know. Just generally. I have people telling me either bathroom needs attendance when Im working at Keys. But this person (in a nice but embarrassed way) told me I had to let the guys know. I dont know how this person identified, but if I were to guess, it would have been female. But they definitely had typically masculine features, so I can see why they were defensive. Maybe they had been assumed male a lot, so they assumed I was making the same assumption. But thats not at all what I was thinking. Just letting an employee (specifically the only one who had talked to me) know about a maintenance issue. I couldve explained all that, but that seems like a lot of stammering and blabbering. I just am worried I made them feel self-conscious or offended! What should I have done? I said, hey sorry, the toilet is super clogged They said, oh youll have to ask one of the guys I said (assuming it was their job or something) oh, is that their deal? Sorry, ok. They said, yeah, Im not a guy. Aahh! Thats not what I was saying! I feel bad, because I kind of just scooted out of there like a sucky dumb guy. *sigh*
