Had an awesome time at the SPCA vet center on Wednesday. I began my first day of volunteering in the recovery area right next to surgery where I got to don a hair net and a face mask like I was a kind of surgeon. While I was there I helped one of the vet assistants squirt water into the dogs and cats mouths while they were waking up to keep them from drying out, clean spay and neuter incisions, help her with the door while she was carrying big dogs back to their cages, carry small dogs and cats to their cages to fully recover, warm up heating packs for and vigorously massaged the small dogs and cats to help wake them up from anesthesia. The most fun part was actually getting to help the vet doing the surgeries with a laser cat declaw by using a foot powered vacuum to suck away the smoke coming from the beaming laser so that it wouldnt go all over and stink up the operating room because she knew I was really wanting to train to become a certified veterinary assistant. Then later when they got to spaying and neutering the feral cats I assisted in removing the breathing tubes, jotting records, sticking rabies vaccine labels onto their paperwork and organizing the papers and paper collars that I had taken off of each cat.
