Had one of the best fourth of July days ever. Wife Jean and I drove North up to Huevelton NY to spend a long weekend with our friends. Long 9 hour drive but after 45 mins of big rain the sky started clearing as we neared Albany. Heading west it was a perfect day in the green and rolling Mohawk valley. The river was high from the rain. Pulled off I 90 in Herkimer to stop for lunch. Another sad American town with big malls and a dead downtown with empty store fronts. But nice touches of old architecture. Fading glory. At Utica we went N again skirting the western Adirondack foothills. Green earth, blue sky and puffy white clouds. Every once in a while a great blue heron flew over the road. Drive was a bit like going back in time. By the time we were in Lewis county we started to see Amish in Buggies.
