Had to share this story. You see, our old barn caught fire in August 1960 and burned to the ground. The fire broke out just after midnight. Mom and Dad got the call from my brother, Clifford ( Kippy, to everyone in Table Grove) telling them what was happening at the farm. We all jumped up, threw on clothes and sped out. The farm was 3 miles out of town but when you looked north toward the horizon it looked like the sun was coming up in a bright red orange. The fire must have been about to its peak. We arrived at the farm and the TG fire department was working hard, but it seemed to push them back farther and farther it grew so hot. They called Adair, Industry, and Vermont department to assist. They soon realized the barn was too far gone to save and no city water access mandated they turn their focus to saving the other buildings including the home. All other buildings were saved. When daylight finally broke and the peak of the fight was over. The TG fire department stayed as a precaution to prevent any new break outs. I went to the back yard behind the garages and looked out over the pasture and saw my horse, Trigger, as far away from the fire as he could get out by the old hedge row. He had all our cows down there and kept running back and forth shaking his head and whinnying to keep the cows there. After everyone was gone, Clifford said that the horse had been acting crazy most of the day, but he had no idea there was a reason. You see, Trigger was of the age and had an injury that made him no longer able to keep his job. He was a member of the mounted police of Chicago. He was a very ugly horse but was a fantastic dependable ride with a spirit and heart of great beauty.
