Half the state of Georgia already knows this, but friends outside of Georgia may be unaware of it. Our local community had a big scare this morning after a 17 year-old high school students grandmother notified the school that the boy was upset with his girlfriend and may try to bring a gun to school. Well he did have a loaded gun. He was confronted. He ran from the school and was apprehended in the parking area. This occurred shortly after 7 AM this morning and since then Ive heard more different opinions of how the matter should have been handled than there are people in Cook County. Im in and out of Cook High School regularly, working with students and teachers. I know almost all of the staff and a great many of the students. I know and respect the school resource officer, a deputy sheriff, and from everything that Ive heard, this incident was handled as well as it could have been. Some people are upset that they didnt immediately get a call, in real-time no less, notifying them that an incident was taking place! That is absurd to me. The last thing that they should have been doing would be to have parents overrunning the school before the situation was secure. Some people want stricter security with metal detectors at every entrance and some now want to arm the teachers. Heres what should happen first... We all should just calm down before making suggestions and accusations and more importantly, EVERY ONE OF US should be thanking and thinking of that grandmother who made such a difficult call this morning. There is no way to know what would have happened had she not acted. I hope that her grandson will someday realize what it took for her to make that decision and what she did for him and for the people of this community today.
