Halloween is about the kids - ALL kids. A message from Jennifer D.: Twelve years ago, my husband and I lived in our first house. We were excited to pass out candy on Halloween, just like grown ups do! We bought our favorite candy to pass out....snickers and Reeses peanut butter cups. That night, a little cowboy came to our door. I was about to put a peanut butter cup in his pillow case when he said do you have anything without peanuts? Im allergic to them. I had nothing. He walked away with nothing. I felt horrible. I realized that Halloween wasnt about me and the candies I liked. It was about the kids. Ever since that year we have always purchased candies without peanuts. It is ironic now that we have a child with a peanut allergy. One in 13 kids has a food allergy of some kind...thats a lot of kids! I feel proud that this year we will have a house that is inclusive for all kids with any allergy because we have candy (nut free of course) but also non-food toys to pass out. Thank you to those of you that have asked me privately or publically about what allergy friendly candies you can buy. Thank you to those of you that have shared your teal pumpkins with me. Im excited that this year, Halloween just may be more inclusive for all kids to enjoy. More kids can happily dart around the dark neighborhood in their costumes gathering goodies at the houses....just like we all did.
