Pupils in Years 9 & 10 visited Merton College in Oxford and got a sense of the history and intelligence surrounding this university. Pupils took part in a debate on ‘Are humans computers?’ A number of suggestions were argued and although they were left with no exact answer everyone had a better understanding of how to think rather than what to think. This debate was very interesting as they experienced what it was like to be taught at Oxford. Pupils got a chance to meet up with ex pupil Alice, who is studying History at Pembroke College. She was inspirational and made pupils believe they could achieve! Pupils thought the grounds and buildings were magnificent and saw the stone table where CS Lewis and Tolkien used to sit. It is thought that the table was the inspiration for the table where Aslan was sacrificed. The day was finished with a visit to the ‘Pitt Rivers’ Museum. Our guide gave the pupils a historic artefact to find with a map, and to find a few interesting facts about the item. The students thought this was very enjoyable and exciting. Pupils were given free time to explore the mysteries surrounding the objects found checking out the three floors full of mind-blowing historic relics, including the infamous ‘shrunken heads’! It was a thoroughly enjoyable trip and showed pupils what can be achieved with hard work. Edward Timperley said “the overall feeling of Merton College was one of amazement, and could be described as an inspiring once in a lifetime opportunity”.
