Halloween vs All Souls Day In America, they display ghosts and ghoulish characters to celebrate halloween. For children and others, they put on costumes of super heroes. To make it more festive, candies and treats are given. In the Philippines where I grew up, the celebration starts with a ritual in lighting up candles for the deceased loved ones, ornamenting their tombs with flowers and staying in their graves for a full ceremony of prayer and family reunion. In America, despite that it is one of the richest countries in the world, more and more people commit suicide and suffer from post-traumatic stress. In the Philippines, while it is considered one of the poorest third-world nations, despite the despicable graft and corruption of the government leaders whose integrity and uprightness are more gruesome than the halloween displays of America, stories of people taking their lives are almost unheard of. I cannot help but think how prayer must play an important role in the way humans live their lives. Halloween and All Souls Day. They both commemorate the dead. But they are revered differently. This tells us something, dont you think? How much prayer and materialism we choose to pour into our beliefs somehow make a difference. ~~TZV
