Hamilton 992B railroad watch movement. The red objects are the jewels (rubies), which are used as bushings because they resist wear better than any metal. The wheels (gears) are gold plated to resist corrosion. The plates, part of one of which is visible on the right, are nickle plated and engine turned, creating the decorative texture you see. All this was normally out of sight inside the watch. This is only a portion of the watchs movement. Visible in this composition are the hair spring, balance wheel, cap jewel, part of the back plate, and a couple of wheels. The area you are looking at is less than an inch across. I took this in 2007 with a Nikon D50 and macro lens. Best viewed in Facebook full screen mode.
