Hamilton Storm Drain Emergency Repair In recent months, City staff has investigated complaints of odors near the intersection of Hamilton Avenue and Brookhurst Street. During the investigation, it was discovered that groundwater, rich in sulfides, had caused corrosion to the concrete storm drain that runs along Hamilton Avenue. The storm drain had numerous holes that allowed the groundwater to seep into the pipe. With the possibility of surrounding soil loss City staff proactively contracted to have the storm drain pipe lined in an effort to seal the pipe and extend its useful life. Prior to lining, the surrounding groundwater table must by lowered through dewatering, which began two weeks ago. This necessitated the closure of the bicycle, parking lane, and one travel lane on the north side of Hamilton Avenue, in addition to the southbound turn lane on Brookhurst Street. In the next few days, the lining process will begin. Construction activities are expected to continue for three to four weeks. Due to the impact to the adjacent shopping center and the motoring public, the contractor‟s allowable work hours have been slightly decreased to allow for better traffic flow.
