"Hammer out a budget. Even kids as young as nine or 10 can come up with a simple budget that tracks money coming in (whether allowance or earnings from a part-time job) and money going out. Once they head off to university or college, budgeting takes on a new urgency, says Andreana. Expenses such as rent and utility payments should come right out of their bank account so they don’t inadvertently dip into the cash. As for day-to-day spending, she suggests students withdraw money from the ATM once a week and perhaps use a jar system to keep expenses in line (clothing, food, beer money). “Then they’re not paying $1.50 every time they go to a different bank’s ATM,” she says. “And they always know how much money they have left to spend.” "
