“Hands on a Hard Body” – a Tony-Award nominated musical that ran for 2 months on Broadway. The star of the show…a Nissan Hard Body Truck. This true life story began in 1992 when a Texas dealership decided to hold a yearly contest in which 24 contestants had to keep a hand on the truck, last one standing won. As this endurance test evolved year after year, it produced a lot of media coverage and community spirit with many spectators coming out to be a part of the excitement. In 1997, a documentary came out chronicling the contest, which had a cult following and caught even Hollywood’s eye. After a failed movie attempt, interest in this annual event was renewed when Pulitzer Prize winner Doug Wright wrote a “clear-eyed portrait of an America that’s a far cry from the fantasyland of most commercial musicals”, according to the New York Times. The centerpiece of the show is a used Nissan Hard Body that was gutted out and retro-fitted with state-of-the-art special effects. Who would’ve thought Nissan would have its own musical?
