Hannah Geelan To everyone who hates bike riders, please read this. I do not ride my bike to make you annoyed, I do not ride my bike to slow your journey by minutes, I do not ride my bike to make your life hell. I have read so much stuff on forums that makes me feel sick. So sick. We have been called maggots amongst many other charming things including saying we would be better off dead. I want to tell you something. Every person on a bike is a human, just like you. I want to tell you my story. I have two loving parents, two step parents, three brothers and two sister-in-laws that mean the world to me. I have a lot of friends who I am extremely attached to and the most caring boyfriend. I am in my 3rd year of Physio at Uni and hope to one day rehabilitate people with brain injuries so they can learn to walk and talk again. I am a lover of life, although just like everyone else, my life hasnt always been easy. I love the simple things in life .. Talking with friends and family, laughing, smiling, waterfalls/nature and dogs. I still cry about my Millie and Molly who passed away over three years ago. One of the things I love is cycling. I havent found anything better for destressing and just simply enjoying the moment. Yes I ride on roads, and you may hate that. But I legally have a right to be there so what gives you the right to abuse me, get as close as you can to scare me, why do I deserve this? I enjoy an active healthy life style, I follow the road rules and respect other road users so why cant you respect me? Thank you to the ones who do but to the few that simply hate cyclists, why would you risk my life? Why is mine worth less than yours because of the fact I love riding my bike? I dont deserve this. I also commute everywhere and get abused for that even though theres a bike lane that I ride in the whole way. Do you not see that I am creating less traffic by choosing to do this? So many people say they have no time to exercise yet spend half an hour or more in peak hour traffic, to drive like 5 km to work and many have to pay for parking. You choose that. Im not going to have a go at you for that life style choice even when you abuse me or cut me off. But please consider that every cyclist has a story, every cyclist is loved. Why risk hurting us? Today a kangaroo was seriously injured by being hit by a car. Who were the group of people that stopped? No, not the car that hit it, nor the many cars that followed after and saw the poor thing struggling so badly. It was us, a group of Lycra clad cyclists that apparently are better off dead. We waited and called animal people who eventually came to help the poor thing. Yet, we are horrible scum worth nothing because we ride on the road to your disgust. You know what I think is disgusting? That you can even call us such nasty things. Heap us in a group and abuse us and show no respect to a fellow human. And that a car drove off after injuring a poor animal. Thats scum. Everyone in a car always seems to be in such a rush, why? Just leave earlier, its pretty simple! Pay attention and show some respect. Everyone has a story, you have a story, I respect that, so respect our lives too.
