Happiness at Yale by Margarita Mooney September 16th, 2014 College students, like everyone else, want to be happy. Educators should help them ground this desire for happiness in acts of virtue. This is a good reflection, as far as it goes. But when you think about teleology--or the purpose of life--in strictly human terms--you end with personal virtue and societal ethics. When you think about History, which aggregates individual stories into a great metanarrative, the goal from a naturalistic, human perspective may seem to be the good society. However, when you consider the impact of human and societal depravity on history, this framework ends in the glorification of man and the state. So, from a faith perspective, history ought to become doxology; an understanding of history that exalts the Lord of History, our Creator, who works redemptively through us for His good purposes. This is what our BBST 465/HIST 465 Biblical Integration Course on History and Meaning will examine. Rood and Jimenez, Thursdays 1:30-4:20, Spring Semester. For graduate credit, confer with your department chair.
