Happy 149th birthday, Mr. President! And congrats on the 94th anniversary of your election to the presidency. On that particular birthday, Sen. and Mrs. Harding began the day by voting for their favorite presidential candidate, whoever that was! Mrs. Harding voted for the first time in her life, since the 19th Amendment, allowing women to vote, was ratified in August. Then the senator and three friends motored to the Scioto Country Club in Columbus to pay a round of golf. They returned to the Hardings house in Marion around dinnertime, and a small group of close friends marked Warrens birthday with a cake decorated with pink icing. A knock on the front door interrupted the small group, and Warren got up from the dining room table to answer it. Standing on the porch were 50 members of the Marion Daily Star staff, who wanted to be the first to congratulate the boss on his election win. (Early reports already were coming in by telegraph to the Star, and the writing was on the wall.) A choked-up Warren accepted a gold printers rule from the group, with the dates already engraved marking his first term in office -- and plenty of room to add the second terms dates. The rest of the night was history -- 60.3 percent of the popular vote and 404 electoral votes!
