Happy Anniversary to my 3rd cousin 5 times removed, James Brown Mason, and his wife Alice (Brown) Mason, married 16 Jul 1799 in Providence, RI. "He graduated from Brown University in 1791. Having studied medicine and surgery under Dr. Brown of Providence, Rhode Island, he removed to Virginia and married. A few years later, his wife having died, he returned to Providence. He married second, July 16, 1799, Alice Brown, daughter of John and Sarah (Smith) Brown. At the period of this marriage James Brown Mason was in the counting room of Mr Brown. In 1804 he was elected Representative to the General Assembly from the town of Providence, and was re-elected annually until 1814, serving as Speaker of the House in 1812 and 1813. "He took a great interest in military affairs and during the period of alarm created by rumors of British invasion of Rhode Island during the War of 1812, was elected Major General of the Militia of the State, and was re-elected from 1814 to 1817. In October, 1814, he was elected Representative to the Congress of the United States, and was re-elected, without opposition, in 1816. He was a trustee of Brown University and a member of the Cincinnati." (Amasa Mason Eaton)
