Happy Birthday Canada! I love you more than you can possibly know. Ive read some things that say I shouldnt celebrate you, because of your past (treatment of aboriginal Canadians) and your present (Harper, oil sands, treatment of aboriginal Canadians) but, the reality is that despite your many flaws, I love you. There is nowhere else on earth I would rather raise my children. I cant think of another country that has managed, in the last 150 years, to be such a beacon of hope to people everywhere because clearly they want to raise their kids here too. I love your lakes, and rocks, and trees. I dont love winter per se but I do love that moment when I open my door and, for the first time of the year, I smell winter (I hate when that happens in mid-September). I love your actors, and comedians, and musicians. Theyre down to earth and maybe thats because eventually theyll have to go home and theyll run into someone at the beer store who knew them before they thought they were all big. I cant skate but I love the first round of the playoffs and cheering against the Leafs. I love that were armed to the teeth but we dont settle things by shooting into crowds over nothing. I love that youre so vast that I still, in 37 years, havent even begun to explore your nooks, crannies, and sensual curves. I love your accents, and your languages, and the myriad of colours that a Canadian can be. I love seeing women match their Hijabs to the colours of their favourite teams jersey, no matter if its The Canadiens, the Blue Jays, or the Saskatchewan RoughRiders. I love 3 downs, and an extra guy, more square yards of field, and a yard off the ball. Basically youre my friend, my trusted confidant, and my inspiration. You arent perfect but either am I or we. At only 147 years old you arent a finished product, you havent even hit your stride yet. You have so much potential, so many talents and gifts. I hope we, your people, can come together to celebrate you and make you even better every year. I love you Canada!
