Happy Birthday, Gavriel Heine! Gavi is a great dude, and one of - TopicsExpress

Happy Birthday, Gavriel Heine! Gavi is a great dude, and one of my favorite people on the planet! Hes an extraordinary conductor that was my Masters degree classmate at Indiana University. We shared many musical adventures and experiences together, along with a minimum of 7 hours/week of class time. Hes been conducting in Russia the past several years at a very famous theater, and was featured at the latest Bruno Walter Memorial preview! Just last month, Gavi and I were able to get together in person in Philly, and had a 6 hour catchup session that was LOOONG overdue! There are so many great stories and memories from our time at IU, and I learned quite a bit from having Gavi as a colleague. I share one silly story in the vid, which happens to be a moment I laughed harder that any other time in my life. The moment was the perfect combination of silly, shock, surprise, and mixed-up language...and the fact that the teacher in question was completely oblivious to the mix-up! Me, Gavi and @kellyconductor could NOT stop laughing for the entire class...and just when the three of us had calmed down, someone would say something (or snicker) and it would start up again. Ive never had a laughing fit that came close to lasting that long, and Im guessing the same for Kelly and Gavi as well...my sides still ache at the memory! Gavis #BirthdayQuest theme is a 4-quote extravaganza! During his time at IU, Gavi conducted on three student concerts, and his Masters recital. I took one quote from each piece he conducted on those concerts, and strung them together to create an epic, free-form theme. Whats particularly clever is that each quote compliments the one that follows, using common tones, complimentary harmonies, or scale-wise melodic connections. As usual, all quotes in the #BirthdayQuest are played in their original keys, but their rhythm and surrounding harmonies are different. If you want to see which quotes I used, check the bottom of the info section on the YouTube page. Happy birthday, bud! It was amazing to see you last month, and I look forward to our next catch-up! Continued success to you, and I hope you enjoy your #BirthdayQuest theme! youtu.be/TxUj36lYJ-o
