Happy Birthday to Albert Finney, Candice Bergen and James L. - TopicsExpress

Happy Birthday to Albert Finney, Candice Bergen and James L. Brooks! Last night, I investigated a documentary on the works of choreographer Pina Bausch, Pina (Wim Wenders, 2010; 9/10), a film which at the time was directed by the youngest female director ever, Boxing Helena (Jennifer Chambers Lynch, 1993; 4/10) and my Curtain Call, as best film of the day, Down by Law (Jim Jarmusch 1986; 9/10), as well as the season two episode of Columbo, one of my favourites from childhood, The Most Dangerous Match (Edward M. Abroms, 1973; 9/10) and the Making of Pina featurette (unknown, 2011; 8/10). Having loved her work in Pedro Almodovars film Talk to Her (2002; 10/10), it was neat seeing a tribute to Pinas lifes work, easily both the best work Wenders has done at least since Buena Vista Social Club if not Wings of Desire, and the best and most imaginative 21st-century use of 3D, at least that I have seen. It certainly made me wish that I myself didnt have two left feet, and that I knew how to dance well. I loved the Jarmusch film, especially the black-and-white cinematography and the charming acting of Roberto Benigni (much better than when he was in the overrated Life is Beautiful). My Five Stars, for cinematic excellence, were: --Actor: Roberto Benigni (Down by Law) --Actress: Nicoletta Braschi (Down by Law) --Director: Wim Wenders (Pina) --Cinematography: Robby Muller (Down by Law) --Soundtrack: Thom (Pina). Tonight: Probably Salesman (Albert and David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin, 1968), Lars and the Real Girl (Craig Gillespie, 2007) and The Last Temptaion of Christ (Martin Scorsese, 1988). Hope you see some excellent films over the weekend as well! Cheers from Film Club! =)
