Happy Birthday to Bob Carbee, R.J. Bucsko and Ivan Yelfimov. A 1987 graduate of Mount Baker, Carbee was a big part of arguable the best Mountaineer team of the 1980’s. The 6-foot-1 210 pound senior was named All-League 1st Team at offensive line, leading the way for fellow All-League 1st Teamers, quarterback Jeff Curtis and running back Tim Jacoby. In a week four battle of unbeatens, the Mounties and the Lions of Lynden were tied at 13 in the fourth quarter when Carbee recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown that ended up giving Baker the win. The Mountaineers were the outright league champions that season for the first time in 16 years, and finished with a 9-2 record after bowing out to league rival Lynden Christian in a thrilling double overtime game in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. A 1990 graduate of Blaine, Bucsko was one of the smallest starting quarterbacks in Whatcom County history. As a freshman he booted seven extra points for the Borderites. In his sophomore year he took over as the starting quarterback. He completed 43 passes for 638 yards and seven touchdowns, while again kicking seven extra points. As a 5-foot-7 165-pound junior he completed 26 passes for 270 yards. He also kicked one extra point and one field goal. He transferred to Zillah for his senior season. In his three varsity seasons Blaine struggled with a 9-18 record. A 2012 graduate of Meridian, Yelfimov was one of the top offensive linemen for the Trojans since the current decade began. As a junior he was named All-League 1st Team at offensive line while the Trojan offense averaged an amazing 7.6 yards per play. As a 5-foot-9 195-pound senior (so the roster sheet says… My eyes saw a man out there, somewhere in the 6’1” 250-pound range) was named All-League 1st Team at offensive line for the second consecutive year. He helped lead the way for another great offense that averaged 7.1 yards per play and 6.3 yards per run. Meridian combined for a 20-4 record in Yelfimov’s junior and senior seasons.
