Naraha Assembly Rejects Referendum on Radioactive Soil Storage Fukushima, Jan. 29 (Jiji Press)--The Naraha assembly voted down on Wednesday a bill for an ordinance for a referendum on whether to accept the construction in the town in Fukushima Prefecture of an interim storage facility for radioactive soil. The vote was four in favor and six against. The facility is for the storage of soil and other waste generated from the decontamination of areas polluted by radioactive fallout from the March 2011 nuclear accident at Tokyo Electric Power Co.s Fukushima No. 1 power plant in the northeastern Japan prefecture. Naraha Mayor Yukiei Matsumoto, who submitted the bill following calls for such a referendum from town residents, said before the town assembly, This is an issue that should be discussed by the whole of Fukushima Prefecture. It is not appropriate for Naraha alone to put the issue to a referendum, Matsumoto said. Another participant in the assembly meeting said, Holding a referendum only in Naraha would create bad feelings among neighboring municipalities.
