Happy Birthday to legendary director, Howard Hawks! He wouldve been 118 today. With this occasion upon us, theres no reason why the following Hawks classics shouldnt be rented out prior to closing time: THE BIG SLEEP (1946): Classic film noir, w/ Bogie as P.I. Philip Marlowe and Bacall as femme fatale Vivian Rutledge. Dorothy Malone co-stars as a nymphomaniacal book clerk who distracts Marlowe from his P.I. duties. One of the most sheerly enjoyable films of Hollywoods Golden Age! BRINGING UP BABY (1938): In which Katharine Hepburn, for better or worse, invents the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Hysterical comedy about an heiress who flips Cary Grants world upside down. Terrific fun! Dans favorite classic comedy. RIO BRAVO (1959): A favorite of film critic Robin Wood, this iconic Western starring John Wayne, Ricky Nelson, and Angie Police Woman Dickinson purportedly began life as a response to HIGH NOON (a film Wayne found Un-American). This movie influenced a whole generation of filmmakers, most notably John Carpenter. HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940): Slapstick tour de force w/ Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell as a recently divorced couple working as journalists. Not recommended for those who succumb easily to sensory overload; the dialogue is spoken at nearly 100 MPH.
