Of what use is the idea of nation? Never did I imagine myself arguing with Salim Rizwan, Indias once prominent journalist of the 80s, during a train journey to Chennai. Journalist: Unless we develop the mythologies of nation, where in we construct the ideal of a how a nation could be, we cannot progress as a nation Me: Do we really need an ideal of nation to steer our masses towards progress? Of what use is the idea of nation? Isnt being patriotic just another myth making exercise aimed to keep the narrative of the state going ? Do we always need to have a model ( irrespective of how much it may be coloured by our present value system) of the future to build the future? Journalist: The ideal of nation may not be necessary for the intelligentsia. But for the masses, they need an ideal of nation to hold on to. They need this idea as an edifice to build their dreams of progress. You cant progress unless you have a clear vision of what. What are your thoughts?
