Happy Birthday today (Aug. 29) to Scottish singer-songwriter Eddi Reader; after serving as a backup singer with UK post-punk band Gang of Four & as a studio session singer, she first came to prominence as lead vocalist of 80s UK neo-skiffle band, Fairground Attraction; they scored the 1988 UK #1 single Perfect (winning best single at the 1989 BRIT Awards) from UK #2 album The First of a Million Kisses (best album at the 1989 Brits); later, as a solo artist, Eddi scored the 1994 UK #33 single Patience of Angels from her self-titled, second solo album, which won her the Best Female Singer BRIT Award; in 2003, she recorded the tribute album Sings the Songs of Robert Burns for which she was awarded an MBE for outstanding contributions to the arts; Eddi has been recognized for her contributions to music & to the education & encouragement of young musicians with three honorary doctorates - from the University of Strathclyde (2007), Glasgow Caledonian University (2007) & the University of Stirling (2008)…
