Happy Birthday today (Jan. 26) to Canadian rock drummer Corky Laing, best known as a long-time member of pioneering American hard rock band Mountain; with Corky at the drum kit, they released the influential albums Climbing! (1970), Nantucket Sleighride (1971), Flowers of Evil (1971) & Mountain Live (1972), scoring the 1970 US #21 classic Mississippi Queen; Corky performed what would become one of the most sampled drum breaks in hip hop history on the live version of Mountains Long Red; he & Mountain bandmate Leslie West went on to form blues-rock power trio West, Bruce & Laing with former Cream bassist/vocalist Jack Bruce (two studio albums & a live release) before Mountain reformed in 1974 for two more albums, Avalanche & the live Twin Peaks; they reconvened again in 1985 for Go For Your Life & have continued with Corky to this day; Corky has also led his own groups, Cork, as well as Corky Laing & The Memory Thieves (latest album, the 2012 House of Thieves); in 2007, Corky recorded Stick It!, the audio version of his memoirs…
