Happy Birthday today (Oct. 1) to Richard Barone, who first came to prominence fronting 80s Hoboken, New Jersey post-punk band, The Bongos; their unique blend of British Invasion-flavored power pop, jangly guitars & dance beats effortlessly veered off into oblique, angular & edgy interjections; the groups college radio fave In the Congo single was arguably their perfect three minutes of pure, manic pop perfection, while debut album Drums Along The Hudson was one of the essential alternative music LPs of the early-80s; Richard released his critically-acclaimed debut solo album, Cool Blue Halo just before The Bongos amicable breakup in 1987; he has since continued to release albums & tour as a solo artist while working as a songwriter, arranger, author, director & producer, creating major concert events at Carnegie Hall, Hollywood Bowl & New Yorks Central Park; in 2014, he co-produced a major tribute to the late Lou Reed at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas - the three-hour concert featured over 24 acts; Richard is also is a professor at NYUs Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music…
