Happy Birthday today (Sept. 29) to John Drumbo French, who came to prominence serving as drummer/percussionist with Captain Beefhearts Magic Band for most of its existence, from 1966-80 (minus various short-term, often-acrimonious splits); he first performed on 1967s Safe As Milk LP, & Beefheart dubbed him Drumbo; during the sessions for the legendary Trout Mask Replica album (released in 1969), John transcribed the musical ideas Beefheart played for him on piano for the rest of the band; John subsequently made solo records & played with the experimental quartet French Frith Kaiser Thompson (1987 album Live, Love, Larf & Loaf & 1990 Invisible Means); he reformed The Magic Band as a live act in 2003; in 2008, he released the solo album City of Refuge (under his Drumbo moniker); John published the memoir Beefheart: Through the Eyes of Magic in 2010…
