Happy (Canadian) Thanksgiving everyone! Most of you would know that this year I am not in Vancouver celebrating Thanksgiving with my family, rather I am one of about 40ish students that stayed on campus (University of Kings College) to celebrate here. This year I am going to be spending my Thanksgiving with my new family. Being here has taught me that I am not always going to be home or with my family during the big holidays of the year. (Thankfully Ill be spending almost a month in Vancouver for Christmas!) I will not always have home cooked meals waiting for me. That is why this year I am thankful for my family. This year I have been through a lot of ups and downs with a lot of people and made decisions that will impact the rest of my life, going to university and deciding some major decisions about my home life and the healthy relationships that I needed to have and not the infectious one that I did. When you are away from your family, an hour or across the world, you realize how much family does mean to you and sometimes when you feel like shit you want them right there beside you to comfort and guide you through life. Ive needed that a couple of times in the past month and a half that Ive been in university but Im also learning to make my own decisions and not have my parents make all of them for me. Like right now Im just about to start my second college essay at 11:18 at night, but its due on Wednesday and I know what Im writing about. But I also have no heating so Im like wearing 10 layers. If youre reading all of this Im so proud of you!!! This next year is going to be so interesting and different, welcoming new people into the world and saying goodbye to some others, going with the twists and turns of life and dealing with them as you go, hopefully new relationships that will last a lifetime and letting go of the ones that have already lasted a lifetime. Experiencing new and old things. And making decisions that will impact the rest of your life. Im going to end with a quote that I love by Walt Disney Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things… and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
