Happy Fourth of July! Today we celebrate our nation’s independence and the founding principles that continue to serve as the cornerstone of our great democracy – equality, justice and liberty. Like all Americans, I am looking forward to spending time celebrating our nation’s independence with friends and family this holiday weekend. As all Rhode Islanders know, our state’s history is intertwined with the remarkable history of our nation. Rhode Island was the first of the thirteen original colonies to officially break its ties to Great Britain, two Rhode Islanders – Stephen Hopkins and William Ellery – were among the 56 signers of the Declaration, and Bristol, which I am proud to represent, is home to the oldest continuous Fourth of July celebration in America. Today, I am especially looking forward to marching in the 229th Annual Bristol Fourth of July parade and enjoying great food at my sister’s home after the parade. As families and friends gather to celebrate our nation’s independence this year, we must be especially grateful for all the brave men and women in uniform who are still serving the United States throughout the world. We honor their continued sacrifice today and renew our commitment to ensure they return home as quickly and safely as possible. I wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July.
