Happy Halloween everyone. I happen to love Halloween and wearing masks (or taking them off) for a night of laughs and screams. I love it so much, I might be finding reasons to wear masks through the end of November ;-) Only...This year Ive noticed an awful lot of people going to great lengths to be offensive. Ive also noticed others who are unaware of cultural appropriation that are accidentally offensive. To the first group of people who use halloween as an excuse to be offensive. Perhaps you need to ask yourself why you feel the need to offend everyone with your costume? What exactly does it do for you to be an Ebola Nurse, or Ray Rice and his wife? How is this in the spirit of having a good time? You could just wear a t-shirt that says I AM A DESPICABLE HUMAN instead and wed get it and youd be able to save your costume money and spend it on really cheap beer. For the accidental cultural appropriation folks, sometimes youre just going to end up appropriating things, people tend to understand that accidental disrespect happens. The correct response when being confronted with that is along the lines of Oh, Im sorry I didnt realize that this was so meaningful to a group of people, Ill stop doing that. The correct response is NOT a bunch of weasel worded, namby pamby, defensive posturing hogwash that expects the offended culture to be more understanding. Take responsibility and get over yourself. In other words people be thoughtful with your costumes (Or I will shame you with impunity) and have a fantastic Halloween no matter what youre getting up to.
