Happy Hanukkah! On Thanksgiving, some Americans will have twice the reason to be thankful due in part to an event that can’t happen again for 79,000 years: Thanksgiving and the first day of Hanukkah fall on the same day this year. The last time the date matched was sometime in the 1880s (a November Hanukkah) did happen, but not a Thanksgiving mix because the holiday wasn’t set at that point. “Hanukkah begins the night before Thanksgiving,” she said. “The first candle is lit the night before Thanksgiving. The first day of Hanukkah runs from sundown the night before until sundown on Thanksgiving Day. At sundown on Thanksgiving Day, we light the second candle and start the second day.”
