Happy Holidays to everyone!!! My family and I wanted to say thanks to those who continued to support the smaller shops like my own by purchasing gifts for themselves and loved ones. It has been a slow season, but every purchase helps keep the lights on. The holidays can be tough emotionally for a lot of folks; be vigilante to encourage a lonely neighbor, a friend feeling the blues or your own positive outlook of life. Forget the haters or judgmental opinions some people constantly spew for lack of their own happiness and try to spread a little joy to others. Compassion and a lending hand can help folks, especially during the Holiday Season. FISHING REPORT: Cod, do you remember them? A few boats continue to report these fish, but the reality is the stocks are so depleted, only several may be caught on a trip and usually by a select fisherman. If not for Sea Bass and occasional Ling or Pollack, the boat trip just might become a 3 hour (one way trip) with no fish to bring home for dinner. No doubt it is very tough out there for for hire boats. Captains try their hardest to find new wrecks and migrating fish, but the wintertime season has been on a decline for several years. New Jersey still has an open Blackfish season, so if your still itching to go fishing...check out the schedule there for available boats. The water temps are still optimal for wreck fishing. Herring are still local, but youll have to get the tide pattern right for when they really start to bite. It can be tough going out into the cold only to catch a few, which are not enough to pickle. I usually favor the end or beginning of the tides to target Herring....go for deep water to so the sabiki rigs can be used (they can be 5ft long out of the package). Fresh water can be exciting for trout fishing when it snows lightly so go try that for a change, but make sure your fresh water license is till valid for the new year. SHOP NEWS: We have a huge selection of new rods in stock to check out over winter and most items not in stock can be ordered in a timely manner. ROD BUILDING NEWS: We recently renovated again to create two separate working areas to accommodate our growing rod & reel service business. The reel repair center is now part of the main shop area, so conversations with customers are easier while cleaning/repairing reels. The exciting news about rod building and upcoming lessons is that we now have a private workshop dedicated to rod building. Folks will be able to work on their own or with an instructor using our lathes and custom built rod drying cabinet. The rod drying box will be available to the public for those fishermen not able to cure rods properly on their dining room table or dusty basement workshop. The drying box should be completed by the end of January. Our power/ open drying rack is always available and is still dust free. The new heated & 100% dustless box will take building/ repairs to a new level. ROD BUILDING CLUB/ GATHERINGS: I am looking for feedback from bloggers to see if anyone is interested to start meeting at the shop to talk about rod building techniques, share knowledge and practice using our equipment. This is a new thing, so feedback and participation is vital to making the meetings work. Please let me know how you think of the idea. SEMINARS: Not sure about them this winter because it seems everyone has a seminar these days and I personally feel they have lost value from past experience. Seriously, how many times can a subject be approached while retaining fresh and exciting interaction with the audience? I like to keep things fresh, new and exciting. I am leaning in the direction of prepaid classes for the future to encourage interested fishermen in attending rather than looking to kill a couple hours in a chair drinking coffee....I mean isnt that boring to most folks or am I alone in these thoughts? feedback please PART TIME HELP NEEDED: I am currently seeking individuals with a fishing background willing to work the earlier shift so our shop can begin opening the doors around 5am next season. Anyone interested can email me with your info at markmcgowan80@yahoo
