Happy Saturday evening, all; Rob the Allen Web Guy here. Thought some of you might enjoy this, if you havent seen it before. We lost Robin Williams this week, and I’d been looking around the Web for one of my favorite performances of his, but couldn’t find it. As it turns out a friend of mine had had the same idea, but better luck. Williams was a wonderful actor, capable of nuanced performances in both comic and dramatic roles. But I feel what made him truly special was his unearthly gift as a comic improviser. Occasionally, he was able to bridge the two, with spectacular results – think of his on-air hijinks in Good Morning Vietnam, or his role (much of it ad-libbed) as The Genie in Aladdin. Those were wonderful, but I love the seven or so minutes of improvisation he conjured up on his Inside the Actors Studio interview from 2001. Host James Lipton asks him to explain the “mental reflexes you deploy” while improvising onstage. Of course, there’s no way for Williams to properly explain it. So he demonstrates, starting at 1:47 …
